How to make and use 10% bleach solution

Have you read a sex toy review and seen the term "10% bleach solution" in the cleaning instructions? Ever wondered what it was or how to use it? Read on for information on 10% bleach solution, how to make it, and how to use it.

What is 10% bleach solution?
A 10% bleach solution is a solution made of one part bleach for every 9 parts water. It can be used for general cleaning and disinfecting, but these instructions will be geared toward sex toy cleaning. A 10% bleach solution can be used to disinfect sex toys before use by a different person or before using in the vagina after anal use. In general, it's safe to use on silicone, glass, metal, and plastic toys, but always read your toy's instructions in case there are special cleaning instructions.

How do I make a 10% bleach solution?
To make a 10% bleach solution, you will need:
-Bleach
-Water
-A measuring cup/spoon
-Container with a secure lid/cap (e.g. bottle, jar)
-Label

First, decide how much solution you want to make. Do you want a little bottle to keep with your sex toys? Do you want a big jar to keep near a sink for easy cleaning? For a smaller amount, choose a tablespoon for measuring. For a larger amount, perhaps you'd want a 1/4 cup for measuring. These instructions will refer to a "spoonful" when directing you to measure bleach and water. Open your container and measure one spoonful of bleach into your container. Then measure nine spoonfuls of water into the container and swirl gently. Secure your container's cap or lid. Apply a label to your container and write 10% Bleach Solution on it, so there's no mistaking it for another product.

My 10% bleach solution is in a big glass jar. I like having a wide mouth jar so I can easily access the solution with a paper towel.

How do I use a 10% bleach solution on my toys?
First, wash your toy with soap and water to remove excess lube, fluids, etc. from the surface. Then, take a paper towel and dip it into your bleach solution. If you can't dip your paper towel into your container, pour a little onto a paper towel. Wipe your toy thoroughly, paying special attention to indentions, ridges, and other places that might not get bleached on the first pass. If you need more, take another piece of paper towel and wet it, then apply more. Don't re-dip the original paper towel. Don't dunk your sex toy into the 10% bleach solution container

After wiping, allow the toy to sit with the bleach solution on it for a minute or so. Rinse the toy very well using warm or hot water then dry and store your toy as usual. If you are cleaning a butt plug that has retained ass smell, you can leave the 10% bleach solution on it longer to help with the smell. I have wrapped a butt plug in a paper towel damp with 10% bleach solution to help get rid of ass smell (the toy was silicone). I left it wrapped for perhaps an hour or so and had no problems.

  1. Thank you! I read about 10% bleach solution in so many places, yet no one has ever explained how to make it. I'm a chemistry major so I'm sure I could figure it out pretty easily, but it's nice to have a step by step guide and instructions on how to properly use it.

  2. Do you know why so many places recommend a less than 10% solution? 1 part to 10 parts water is super common, too.

  3. @duskinchains - You're quite welcome. Chemistry was my major, too ;)

@Adriana - I found a couple of CDC pages last night that recommended 10% solutions but said that the minimum concentration of bleach needed to inactivate viruses was a lot lower than what's in a 10% solution. This page talks about the concentrations needed and explains why they think 10% is needed for tough cleaning like after rodents. I couldn't find a more general cleaning recommendation, though. I think 1 to 10 parts is just easier to remember and/or might be a misnamed version of 10% bleach solution.

  4. This is a great post. Next review I do (sometime soon) I'll link to this when mentioning cleaning options. :)

  5. This was very helpful. Thanks. I've been using 1 part bleach to 10 parts water thinking I was making a 10% solution but DUH it IS 1:9 ratio. LOL. I also love the info on eliminating "ass smell". :)
